In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Vandalia Railroad connected Hendricks County towns, providing convenient travel and thriving commerce between them. Today’s Vandalia Trail corridor vibrantly restores that link with a modern progressive twist. Improvements to the western section of the trail and plans for connectivity open up opportunities for future travel and commerce. Hendricks County Parks & Recreation operates a four-mile section of the Vandalia Trail – a scenic biking and hiking corridor...

It is not news that people want to live near parks and trails. They want to be close to what makes their lives better. That’s the message from Matt Howrey, president of North Salem State Bank, a strong supporter of county parks, and a former board member of the Parks Foundation of Hendricks County. “People move near McCloud Nature Park, tear down old houses and build new ones,” says Howrey. “They want to be...

Parks are pretty. They're relaxing. They're fun and educational and great places for families and friends to gather. But did you know that parks also play a major role in our economy? The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) conducted a study on the economic impact of local parks, wherein they learned that in 2013 alone, our country's local and regional public parks generated nearly $140 billion in economic activity and supported almost 1...

Orchestrating all of the programs and activities that Hendricks County Parks & Recreation offers requires a dedicated Park Naturalist who has a true passion for all things nature. We are fortunate to have exactly that in our own Park Naturalist, Sarah Wolf. We recently stopped by the Nature Center at McCloud Nature Park, where you can often find Sarah hard at work, and we asked her a few questions. Here's what she told us.   What...

A Hendricks County woman’s photo of herself and her daughter won a national selfie contest through the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA), and she then donated her $500 prize to Hendricks County Parks and Recreation.   To celebrate Parks and Recreation Month in July, NRPA held a selfie contest with a different theme every week, encouraging people to take pictures of themselves while enjoying the great outdoors. Each week’s winner took home a...

Maintaining the 232-acre McCloud Nature Park, the 210-acre Sodalis Nature Park, and the three miles of the Vandalia Trail between Amo and Coatesville is a huge task for our entire maintenance crew, but that's where our Park Manager, Jim Holtsclaw, shines. If we need something planned, built or fixed in our parks, Jim's our guy. He's also pretty good at bossing people around. We managed to pull Jim off the tractor recently and asked him to...

As you may already be aware, we are in the midst of a Wetlands Mitigation Project at McCloud Nature Park as a result of the construction of Ronald Reagan Parkway. Through this project, we're creating a 2.5-acre wetlands area, stabilizing the streambank to improve the Big Walnut Watershed, creating native aquatic plant and animal habitats, and enhancing educational opportunities for all park visitors. As part of the Wetlands Mitigation Project, we had to cut down...

We get so busy in the summer months at McCloud Nature Park, Sodalis Nature Park and the Vandalia Trail that Hendricks County Parks & Recreation has to hire seasonal naturalists for a few months to help with all of our activities. If you have taken your kids out to any of our Summer Nature Day Camps, or if you've just been out to McCloud Nature Park for a visit, you've probably seen one of our seasonal...

This July, everyday citizens don’t need to be bitten by a radioactive spider to discover that they have super powers. They just need to visit their nearest park or recreation center to find super powers they didn’t know they had. Hendricks County Parks & Recreation is celebrating Park and Recreation Month, an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), and all the ways parks and recreation has the power to transform our daily...

The severe thunderstorm that tore through Hendricks County and Central Indiana on June 15 led us to cancel our Summer Fun Run Series event at McCloud Nature Park and, as our maintenance crew discovered today, caused significant damage to some of the trails in the park located just outside of North Salem. Park Manager Jim Holtsclaw took these photos of a few of the trails as his crew spent June 16 -- and certainly...

We had to cancel the June 15 Summer Fun Run event at McCloud Nature Park at the last minute due to a poorly-timed severe thunderstorm that ravaged the area. While many participants -- including several who had already arrived at the park when we canceled -- were gracious about it, some were understandably frustrated by the last-minute decision. We would like to assure everyone that we did not take the decision to cancel the event...

We are very excited to have our new superintendent in place! Jeremy Weber came to us from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and he officially began his tenure as Hendricks County Parks & Recreation superintendent on June 6. We gave him a week or so to get moved to Hendricks County and get some sense of his surroundings here before we started grilling him with questions. Here's what we learned about Jeremy:   What is...

A total of 35 people, including 20 young anglers, attended the event, and 50 fish were caught! Here are our plaque winners for this year's event:   Smallest Fish   Age 4-8 winner:  Logan Catellier (4 inches)     Age...

If you've been to Sodalis Nature Park recently, you've probably noticed something -- a whole lotta something -- in the water of the pond. If you're planning to attend the Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday at Sodalis, you'll definitely notice it. Rest assured, we've noticed it, too, and we have a plan. Park Naturalist Sarah Wolf identifies the growth in the water as curlyleaf pondweed -- a non-native, invasive plant species that originates from Europe and...
